Adoption, surrogacy and adoption appointments
Introduction
This policy applies to all Employees meeting relevant adoption or intended-parent conditions.
Eligibility and notification
Adoption leave generally applies where an employee is matched through an approved agency, adopts from overseas or is an intended parent in a qualifying surrogacy arrangement. Matching, placement, entry or parental-order information and notice are required. One eligible parent takes adoption leave; the other may qualify for paternity or shared parental leave.
Adoption appointments
A sole or primary adopter may take paid time off for up to five qualifying appointments. A secondary adopter may take unpaid time off for up to two. Each appointment is limited to the statutory maximum, currently six and a half hours including travel and waiting, unless a more favourable arrangement is confirmed.
Leave and pay
Adoption leave is up to 52 weeks. Statutory Adoption Pay may be payable for up to 39 weeks where current conditions are met. Start rules differ for UK placement, overseas adoption and surrogacy; HR confirms the correct date and return.
During leave and return
Contractual rights other than remuneration continue as required. Holiday accrues, pension continues during paid leave under scheme rules and up to 10 KIT days may be agreed. Return and detriment protections are administered lawfully.
