Parental, neonatal, bereavement, caring and dependant leave

Introduction

Employees for employee-only rights; workers may have separate rights where legislation provides.

Ordinary parental leave

From 6 April 2026, ordinary parental leave is a day-one right for eligible employees. Entitlement is normally 18 weeks per child, generally in whole weeks, subject to annual limit and notice. Different rules permit shorter blocks for a disabled child. Leave is unpaid unless an enhancement is confirmed.

Neonatal Care Leave and Pay

An eligible employee receives one week of Neonatal Care Leave for each qualifying uninterrupted week of neonatal care after the statutory waiting period, up to 12 weeks. It can be taken within 68 weeks under Tier 1 and Tier 2 notice rules. Statutory pay requires the applicable service and earnings conditions.

Parental Bereavement Leave

An eligible employee may take two weeks following the death of a child or qualifying stillbirth, as one block or separate weeks within 56 weeks. Statutory pay has separate tests. PGS handles notice sensitively.

Carer’s Leave

An employee has a day-one right to up to one working week of unpaid Carer’s Leave in a rolling 12 months for a dependant with a long-term care need. It can be taken in half-days or whole days. PGS may postpone, but not refuse, a qualifying request where the statutory disruption test is met.

Time off for dependants

Employees may take reasonable unpaid time off for an unexpected incident involving a dependant, to arrange care or respond to an emergency. Notify PGS as soon as reasonably practicable. The right covers the immediate emergency, not unlimited continuing care.

Compassionate and pregnancy-loss support

PGS may approve compassionate leave where a close relative dies, is critically ill or suffers life-threatening injury and may support pregnancy loss or another traumatic event. Unless the contract or written decision provides pay, leave is unpaid. The normal policy limit is up to 10 days in a 12-month period, with additional unpaid leave or annual leave considered case by case.

Evidence and privacy

Only reasonable evidence is requested. Sensitive family and medical information is restricted. Holiday and statutory return/detriment protections apply as required.
