Maternity, pregnancy and antenatal appointments
Introduction
This policy applies to Employees; relevant H&S and AWR appointment rights also apply to qualifying agency workers.
Notification and safety
An employee is encouraged to notify PGS early so that pregnancy risk, assignment suitability, appointments and leave can be planned. By the statutory deadline the employee provides the expected week of childbirth, intended start and MATB1 or other evidence.
Antenatal appointments
A pregnant employee is entitled to reasonable paid time off for antenatal care on professional advice. A qualifying companion has the statutory right to unpaid time off for up to two appointments, subject to the statutory maximum, unless PGS confirms more favourable terms. A qualifying agency worker gains the AWR antenatal right after 12 weeks.
Leave and pay
Maternity leave is up to 52 weeks: 26 ordinary and 26 additional. The compulsory period after childbirth is observed. SMP is available for up to 39 weeks where current service and earnings conditions are met; otherwise Maternity Allowance may be relevant.
During leave
Except for remuneration, contractual terms continue as required. Holiday accrues and pension contributions continue during paid leave under legal and scheme rules. Reasonable contact and up to 10 keeping-in-touch days may be agreed.
Return and protection
The statutory right to return to the same or, where permitted, suitable alternative job is protected. Flexible working, breastfeeding, safety and adjustments should be discussed early. Pregnancy, maternity or related absence must not cause unlawful detriment or selection.
