Health and safety at PGS premises and client sites

Introduction

This policy applies to all staff, workers, contractors and visitors affected by GPS work; client-site responsibilities apply on assignment.

Shared responsibility and control

PGS takes reasonably practicable steps within its control. At a client site, the hirer normally controls premises, local risks, equipment, emergency procedures, first aid, task systems and daily supervision. The agency may hold assignment and suitability duties. Report to the site controller and PGS/agency where relevant.

Induction, risk and competence

  • Complete site induction and task briefing before unfamiliar or safety-critical work.
  • Follow risk assessments, safe systems, infection control, COSHH, manual handling, height, electrical, machinery, driving and PPE requirements.
  • Do not operate equipment or perform regulated tasks without training, competence and authorisation.
  • Stop work and escalate serious and imminent danger, a missing control, unsafe staffing or an instruction outside competence.

Accidents, near misses and ill health

Report all work accidents, injuries, near misses and work-related ill health promptly to the client/site process and PGS. Record the event in the appropriate accident system. PGS and the site controller cooperate on investigation, RIDDOR assessment and prevention.

Fire and first aid

Know the alarm, exits, assembly point, evacuation and first-aid contacts at each location. Client instructions take priority during an emergency. Do not obstruct or misuse fire doors, alarms, routes or safety equipment.

DSE, remote and lone work

Significant display-screen users receive an appropriate workstation assessment and eyesight testing under DSE rules. Remote and lone workers maintain a safe workspace, check in as required, protect confidential conversations and report welfare/security concerns.

Driving, fatigue, alcohol, drugs and smoking

Driving for work requires a valid licence, insurance, safe vehicle and compliance with road and driver-hours rules. No person may work or drive while impaired by alcohol, illegal drugs, misuse of medication, fatigue or another condition creating material risk. Prescribed medication affecting safety should be raised confidentially. Smoking and vaping are limited to lawful designated areas and client rules.

Pregnancy and disability

PGS and the hirer review relevant risks for pregnancy, breastfeeding, disability or health conditions and consider adjustments, alternative work or suspension where statutory conditions require.
